Nick Hornby- Characters You care about
I read “High Fidelity” years before the movie was made. As much as I like John Cusack and the movie, the book was way better. Nick Hornby is British and his stories are based in England. “High Fidelity” taking place in Chicago seemed out of place.
This started a series of books by Hornby that I read; About A Boy, A Long Way Down, Slam, Juliet Naked, A State of the Union and Songbook. All these books were fun and enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong, two of those books involve divorce. There’s teen pregnancy. Overall I never left a book feeling worse off.
Hornby writes a lot of dialogue. These books are easy to option for a movie because he uses so much dialogue. Hornby doesn’t write long descriptions or scene setting. He specializes in the character. The character feelings and thoughts.
Hornby even wrote movie adaptations of his books.
Hornby has written some non-fiction and that was his latest book to date. I haven’t heard from Hornby in a while. He’s been involved in playwriting and movie work.
He had been so many genres and types of work for so long that I’m sure I’ll see another book. Until then, the books are not dated and they are a good read.
