Mix Tape's History Remix

Distractions

I have the idea for a sequel to a work in progress. I pretty much know the end of the story. I have a beginning, it may change. The middle is always the problem. The biggest problem, I have to write first. I can read and edit and form and shape the work. Taking that first step of typing, that’s the tough part.

I could start the outline. Ok, that just phrases. I need to write this.

Start the scene: he walked in the room. Oh that sucks. Ok really start the scene: He stopped at the door. A creak echoed in the empty room. What is that?

That took ten minutes. Starting will be tough.

When Mix had to do homework in 1987, he could be distracted by the radio or Family Ties on television. He may read magazines.

There were video games, but the first video game craze of the early 80s had passed. He didn’t know many people with a Sega game console.

Teenagers didn’t read unless it was a magazine or comic book. Book reports in school were a nightmare. He read the description on the book covers and wrote a few paragraphs about that. Teachers didn’t care so he got good grades for that.

Today, I try to start the next blog post. There was a podcast I could put on while I write, but then I start listening.

There are so many songs out there. Now that radio is obsolete, I can find loads of new streaming services. There are streaming services I could find a movie.

Audio book. That would be like a podcast.

YouTube for videos.

Today there are more distractions than before and yet so many that I could skip them and not feel lost.
