Mix Tape's History Remix

Lemmy Protects

For everyone who read or is about to read Mix Tapes and Empty Buildings, this is a little story about a day in the life of Lemmy.

Lenny loved the band Motörhead so much that he wanted everyone to call him Lemmy. He wore their shirts, had the cassettes in his jacket pockets, and grew his hair out. He had friends into hard rock that didn’t know the band. Motörhead was his alone to enjoy. Lemmy never tried to be in the popular crowd because he never could.

As a sophomore he stayed away from trouble but people figured he found trouble anyway. On Tuesday, he watched a junior push a freshman into a locker before second period. The scrawny freshman tried to stand his ground, but the bigger taller juniors had him blocked.

“Come on, dude,” the freshman whined. “I’m not my brother.” The freshman’s hands shook as he talked. These freshman must think high school is like tv. This underling wore bright colors, baggy pants, and he rolled up the sleeves of his jacket. The kid could be on Square Pegs or some show like that.

Lemmy would never be called anyone’s hero. He went to school, hung out with friends, spent Fridays away from home. He disappeared from home when he could.

The freshman banged against the locker so hard it shook the Master lock of the next lockers. They will hurt the freshman.

“Guys, I need to get to my locker,” Lemmy said.

All of them stopped. The big junior sneered, “now.”

“Yeah. For next period.”

The freshman slid off the one locker slithered away from his attacker, till an arm went out and blocked him. The junior dragged the freshman down two lockers so Lemmy could get at the locker they were at.

The problem was it wasn’t his locker. His locker was in another hallway. Lemmy toyed with the lock. “Forget it. I don’t that book.”

“What kind of stupid ass stoner are you?” The junior asked. The freshman laughed.

“I changed my mind. It’s allowed.”

The junior shook his head. “This place.”

Lemmy backed away from them while still watching. The freshman slid away but didn’t run. He could’ve snuck away due to Lemmy’s distraction, but he stayed.

“Forget this. We got Chem to go to.” The junior walked away. The freshman turned and went to the next classroom.

“Hey,” said one of the juniors to the freshman “Don’t mind that guy. We’re just busting. See you around.”

Lemmy stood alone in the hallway as the bell rang. He would be late to class again.
