A Hollywood Actress that Lived Quietly in New Jersey
I read the obituaries on Sunday May 3, 2020 when I saw a picture of a young woman. The woman had one of those professional photos that looked photographed in the 1940s. She posed profile. Her hair was perfect and the lighting hit her cheeks just right.
She died at aged 96 so it was an older picture. I skimmed the obituary and found that she was an actress in the 1940s. An actress with a professional head shot that they used for her obituary. Who was this woman?
Kaye Dowd had an IMDB page for the ten movies she appeared in between 1944 and 1945. One of the movies was, “Eadie Was A Lady”, based on the Cab Calloway song. It starred Ann Miller, big name dancer of the time, and future Three Stooge, Joe Besser.
Kaye Dowd was largely support cast and IMDB says she is uncredited in most roles.
She later married Kenneth Bald, a big deal in the comics world as he holds the record for longest producing graphic novelist artist. He started in the 1940s in comics and later newspaper comics. He drew serial comics and mysteries.
I’ll bet it was fun to meet them in the day. Her Hollywood tales and his art world publications would give them hours of stories. They became this quiet suburban couple that had a family and long marriage.
The obituaries can be depressing tales of people who passed, but every once in a while you find these seemingly normal people who were actually fascinating.
Rest In Peace Mrs. Hollywood actress.
