Howard Stern comes in the spotlight again

I read “Howard Comes Again” a few weeks ago and I posted a review on Goodreads. I gave it a three star rating. The concept of transcripts of old interviews just reeks of a money grab. There were in-between essays that brought my rating of the book up.

I remember when Stern started on AM radio in the early 1980s. In spite of modern storytelling, the radio did promote him. He did these television commercials with Don Imus. It turns out they didn’t like each other at all. The commercials had this one radio guy saying that 77am apologizes to the following groups for offensive statements and then he would rattle lists of different groups.

I saw bits of his shows on Channel 9. He continued to be a popular name in Manhattan radio through the years but I never paid attention to his show in the late 1980s.

I became reacquainted in 1992. I used to work for Cavanaugh’s Pest Control in Freehold. The pest control technicians would play the Howard Stern Show on the way to jobs. From that one radio station, Stern just exploded on the national stage. I listened to the show till he went to satellite radio.

After listening to the show for over ten years I didn’t know how I would drive to work in the mornings anymore. Those radio stations that carried his show tried to find another voice, but it wasn’t the same.

I found The Preston and Steve Show out of Philadelphia. His other listeners went to satellite with Howard unless, like me, they found another radio show. Since then radio became obsolete. Satellite and podcasts took over the void.

Even though Howard Stern isn’t the voice of Manhattan morning radio anymore, but I still keep up with him. When I could get the book from the library, I read it. You can read the review at www.goodreads.com
