Mix Tape's History Remix

Mandees Clothing Store

In Chapter 1 of Mix Tapes and Stolen Tests link:  https://www.amazon.com/Mix-Tapes-Stolen-Tests-Lair-ebook/dp/B0139SUN1K/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1484403341&sr=1-1&keywords=mix+tapes+and+stolen+tests we find that Elaine bought her new top at Mandees. For those not in New Jersey in the 1980s, here’s a little history about one of the big fashion stores in New Jersey.

Mandees was started by the Mandelbaum Family in Kearny New Jersey in 1948. (I don’t know if it was the original store, but there was a Mandees on Kearny Avenue next to the Ben Franklins for many years.)
The stores were later bought out by Big M Inc. out of Totowa New Jersey. Mandees was now owned by the same company that owned Annie Sez and Casual Male XL. Under this company, Mandees would continue to grow. They carried fashionable clothes for women. For New Jersey, Mandees would be the place for women to shop.
They grew to 129 stores. They employed 1200 employees.
Times change and so do the places to shop. Mandees fell out of fashion and in 2013, Big M Inc. declared bankruptcy. A company called YM would buy 600 of Big M’s stores so that meant a lot of those Mandees were closed.

There is still an online presence, but the stores are not what they once were.
Much of this information came from wikipedia, Business online, and newspaper headlines on the web searched through Yahoo!.

I wrote this blog because it was the kind of place Elaine would buy a new top for her party. I never received notice or payment from Mandees.
